Between Emperor and Sultan
DOMINION, LOYALITIES AND ADMINISTRATION IN IMPERIAL BORDERLANDS, 1800–1900
Bosnia and Serbia compared
This FWF-funded project focuses on people. People, who in the course of three to four generations experienced changing rule, loyalties and administrations, and whose everyday lives were more or less radically altered by the transformations of statehood. It is about the rulers and the ruled, and the relationship between these two permeable groups in imperial borderlands – in this case Bosnia and Serbia in the nineteenth century.
The project addresses the operation of the ‘old’ empires (the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy) and the ‘young’ nation-states (Serbia) in comparison by referring to concrete local events. In line with international history, local, regional, ‘national’, imperial and international actors are given a platform, thus reflecting processes of interplay and mutual influence. For this purpose, Ottoman, Habsburg, Serbian and Bosnian sources are being consulted.
