Abstract:

Besides well-known 11 year cycles, the Sun's activity undergoes long-term variations over time scales of 100-1000 years, which is not explained by any currently existing mechanism. We show that the magnetic Rossby waves in the solar tachocline, the thin layer below the convection zone, are responsible
for the variation. Our predictions suggest the decline of solar cycle strength in next few cycles, so the next deep minimum will occur around 2030.
