Short bio

Fachi Shi (Shangyuan Yang) is a doctoral student at the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan, and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna, supervised by Dr. Rafal K. Stepien and Dr. Christopher V. Jones. Since September 2024, he has been conducting his dissertation project, “The Two Truths in Jizang’s Theory and Its Relation to Indian Madhyamaka,” within the European Research Council (ERC) project “The Ethics of Empty Beliefs: Chinese Buddhist Philosophy in the ‘Period of Disunity’,” hosted at the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA), Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).

The project investigates Jizang’s articulation of the two truths in the Chinese Sanlun (Three Treatise) tradition and its connections with Indian Madhyamaka. By analyzing Jizang’s interpretations alongside Indian sources, it seeks to clarify the development and transmission of Madhyamaka thought between India and China.
