The Data Team of the Digital Archaeology and Classics Unit (D-DAC) offers consultation on modern research data management practices and database development support.
D-DAC data stewardship support for archaeological projects includes adapting project research data to modern FAIR data standards and open formats, metadata creation and quality control, preparation of data for long-term archiving (specifically in the ARCHE data repository), as well as the development of data management plans for projects, which are currently required by many funding bodies. The D-DAC has advised many projects on the cost analysis and feasibility of creating new online databases, offered strategies for adapting legacy data to new formats, as well as assistance in research data visualisation and incorporating project data into previously existing online databases. The D-DAC has also helped in the creation and maintenance of new database applications that incorporate linked data from Zotero and the OeAI.Digital Core Services.
The oeai.METRIX online database application was originally proposed as a database to host the Fingerprinting White Marbles collection of archaeometric samples. However, in consultation with the D-DAC, the database was expanded to act as a more inclusive materials database for archaeometric results that could be easily adapted to the needs of new materials projects. This allows efficient pooling of resources and increases the user-base and longevity of the application. The database is hosted and maintained by the D-DAC, and provides linked images and object data via the OeAI.Digital Core Services.
The oeai.COIN online database application, originally the updated version of the dFMRÖ (digitale Fundmünzen der Römischen Zeit in Österreich) database, has been expanded to serve as a platform for additional numismatic collections. The D-DAC worked in conjunction with the Numismatics research group to update the content and structure to modern database standards. The database is maintained by 7reasons, while linked images and object data are provided via the OeAI.Digital Core Services.
The D-DAC is currently supporting the project ANAPAN (A New Approach to Pottery of Arabia and its Neighbors) with regular data management consultation, thesaurus management and preparation of data for long-term archiving. The D-DAC is also expanding the oeai.METRIX application to incorporate ANAPAN-specific material data.
The D-DAC is currently supporting the Crossing the Sea project via regular data management consultation, the creation of a new data model and the implementation of a new project-focused database. The support will also involve thesaurus management and preparation of the data for long-term archiving.
