Biographical sketch

Lilli Zabrana is part of the core team at the Department of History at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) since 2025. Before that, from 2010 to 2023, she was already a research associate at the OeAI and has worked on various archaeological and heritage conservation projects in the Balkans and the Middle East, e.g. in Turkey, Egypt and Montenegro. In her role at the OeAI, she is active in the research areas of archaeological building and settlement research and historical spatial planning. Lilli Zabrana studied Classical Archaeology, Pre- and Early History and Art History at the University of Vienna, followed by a Master's degree in Heritage Conservation at the Technical University of Berlin. She completed her doctorate in the field of archaeological building research on the Odeion in the Artemision of Ephesus at the Technical University of Berlin in 2014. Innovative research approaches to the Artemis sanctuary in Ephesus and the reuse of Ephesian building materials were developed by her as part of the FWF-funded Zukunftskolleg 2019-2023. Both focal points are to be explored in greater depth in the coming years.
