The working group ‘Glaciers and Permafrost’ combines expertise in Glaciology, Meteorology, Physics, Geology, Geography, Environmental Sciences and Ecology to investigate the pace and consequences of climate change in the High Alps. The monitoring of the unique processes of Eastern Alpine deglaciation, permafrost destabilization and biotic succession is based on long term efforts and allows ground breaking basic research in evolving new fields.

What we investigate:

  • Glacier mass balances

  • Eastern Alpine ice cores

  • Rock glacier deformation

  • Long term ecological research
