Much of our understanding of carbonate aquifers comes from the detailed monitoring of karst water in temperate regions. Here, we propose to test the limitations of our conceptual understanding with a field‐based approach to quantify the effects of climate change on an aquifer’s hydrological response in a semi‐arid environment. An iterative approach based on hydrogeological investigations and paleoenvironmental reconstructions will provide a critical assessment of groundwater recharge at Djebel Serdj, Tunisia. In collaboration with the Tunisian geological survey and local communities, we aim at developing ideas and scenarios for a sustainable management of karst in arid regions.
