Research aim of the IGF

The aim of the IGF is to study the interactions between people and the environment in mountain regions. The IGF addresses climate change and societal transformations in order to support sustainable transformations in mountain regions. Based on methodologically broad and innovative research approaches, the IGF contributes to a better understanding of the interactions between people and the environment in mountain regions with a newly developed research strategy.

Significance of the Alps

The Alps occupy a special position due to their long research history and extensive data collection. Findings from research in the Alps provide a basis for international comparisons and the transfer of knowledge to other mountain regions worldwide. Close cooperation with international partners helps to overcome global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, globalisation and sustainable development.

Research objectives

  • We study the effects of global climate change on mountain regions and how they are changing the environment and society.

  • We use long-term observation and analysis of ecological and socio-economic changes in mountain regions using innovative methods, including AI.

  • We are using an interdisciplinary approach  that integrates physical, geographical, ecological, social and cultural perspectives, as well as digital science, in order to comprehensively address the interactions between humans and the environment, and complex problems in mountain regions.

  • We are developing adaptation and resilience strategies to support sustainable development in mountain areas.

  • We are cooperating with global partners and contribute to international networks and initiatives focusing on mountain research and development.
