Barbara Steininger studied law and Dutch in Vienna and Leiden, obtaining Master degrees from the University of Vienna in both areas as well as a doctoral degree in law from the same university. During her studies, she was employed as a student assistant at the Institute of Roman Law of the University of Vienna and, after finishing her Master in law in 1999, she worked as a researcher at the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law. In 2002, she joined the newly founded Institute of European Tort Law in Vienna with which she has been affiliated ever since. Barbara Steininger was on leave for employment at the University of Geneva in 2004 and in 2013 she became Assistant Professor at the University of Graz teaching, amongst others, property law and the law of obligations. In 2019 she completed her habilitation and since April 2020 she has been Associate Professor (tenured) for the areas of Civil and Comparative Law at the University of Graz.
