Street festival on Bethlen Gábor Street

On 15 June 2026, the TransHerit research project invited residents and visitors of Budapest’s 7th district to take part in a shared exploration of everyday life in the city’s historic tenement buildings. The event took place on Bethlen Gábor Street and focused on how people experience their homes, neighbourhoods and the ongoing changes affecting Erzsébetváros. Through a community map, a short anonymous questionnaire, a children’s corner and a small exhibition, participants were encouraged to share their memories, perceptions and opinions about living in historic buildings and about the transformation of the surrounding neighbourhood. The programme addressed questions of local identity, social life, housing change, tourism, renovation and residents’ attachment to place. The event forms part of TransHerit’s broader research into Budapest’s Gründerzeit-era tenement houses, built between 1867 and 1918, and the ways in which architectural, social and neighbourhood-level transformations shape everyday urban life today.
