Neighbourhood brunch at Garay Market

Our team participated at the neighborhood get-together community breakfast in Garay market on the 30th of May 2026. The brunch takes place every last Saturday of the month during summer and invites inhabitants and visitors of the Chicago area in the 7th district to participate either as hosts or as guests. Sandra joined as a host and got the opportunity to meet local residents and exchange about ongoing changes that are happening in the area.

The Szendvicsbár Community Space opened its doors in August 2022 in Budapest, Erzsébetváros, at 27 István Street, in a business premises that have been empty for ten years. The initiative involved the creative Placcc Festival, the Ziggurat Project and the SVUNG Research Group, as well as independent artists Máté Fuchs and Bálint Tóth (Meetlab). The opening event offered creative programs for Ukrainian refugee youth, as well as a performative community brunch. The Sandwich Bar is a real "found place": a used but renovated space that has now become a creative meeting place for the local community and the art scene. Since then, it has been operating continuously for about a year and a half, offering art programs and community-building events. The focus of the place is on organizing socially engaged, sustainable and inclusive art events. The main pillars of their activities are the programs of the civil initiatives that have been accepted here, as well as the own projects of the creators operating the square. The place was transformed into a community space on the site of a former café or ice cream parlour – with the help of campaign money, and has been a regular venue for workshops, concerts, discussions and other events ever since. In addition, the Sandwich Bar is also taking an active role in humanitarian and community aid — especially after the start of the war in Ukraine. In addition to the initial children's programs and humanitarian support, community events are continuously organized, which build on the involvement of both refugees and local residents.
