Vortrag: Monitoring glacier elevation changes using ICES/GLAS altimeter data

Satellite altimetry provides a possibility for monitoring elevation changes of glaciers in remote regions. This talk will present an analysis of the elevation changes of the Chongce glacier on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau between 2003 and 2009.  For this period the difference in elevation measurements by the satellites ICESat/GLAS and SRTM-DEM are used. In total, the Chongce glacier shows a melting trend of about -0.15 m/year, which is in accordance with the increasing temperature of the surrounding regions. Interestingly, the southern glacier has a decreasing trend, whilst the northern glacier has an increasing trend. Comparing the ICESat/GLAS and SRTM-DEM data, it was found that both datasets have a very high consistency. This means that we can reliably use these data to monitor glacier elevation changes. However, the complex and rough terrain of the glacier surface can affect the accuracy of the data, and therefore the derived final results.
