Seminar: Geysers, Ocean, and the Search for Life: Why ESA’s L4 mission has to go to Enceladus

In 2024, ESA identified Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus as the leading target for its next Large‑class (L4) mission under Voyage 2050. Despite its small size (ca. 500 km in diameter) and location far beyond the classical habitable zone, the NASA/ESA Cassini-Huygens mission revealed the moon’s exceptional astrobiological potential: Enceladus harbours a global subsurface ocean whose material erupts into space as towering south‑polar plume – giving us direct access to ocean‑derived material. This talk will outline how Cassini’s in situ measurements of plume particles and icy grains in Saturn’s E‑ring informed us about the ocean’s composition and the moon’s interior structure. But Enceladus’s ocean represents not only a vast reservoir of liquid water, but also a potentially habitable environment: Cassini detected complex organic molecules and the full CHNOPS suite alongside evidence for seafloor hydrothermal activity and chemical disequilibria that could fuel potential metabolisms on this tiny icy world. Finally, the talk will briefly highlight laboratory experiments performed on both Earth and the ISS to illustrate why planetary‑protection measures for such a mission are more important than ever.
