Seminar: Machine Learning for Space Debris Characterization

Nadine Trummer (IWF Graz) will talk about how machine learning helps to identify space debris from lightcurves taken with Satellite Laser Ranging.

Thursday 23.01.2025 02:01 pm

The growing population of man-made debris in Earth’s orbit is of high concern for active and future satellite missions due to risk of collision. Knowing object characteristics such as shape, attitude or rotational state can help improve orbit predictions.

This seminar talk will discuss how Machine Learning (ML) techniques can help characterize space debris using an object’s brightness variations over time as input for training. As an example, results of our latest publication will be discussed, which used a variety of ML models to classify space debris.
