Colloquium: Research with sounding rockets and small satellites at KTH

Prof. Mykola Ivchenko (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden) will talk about space instrument development and application to ionospheric and auroral physics.

Thursday 04.12.2025 02:12 pm

The talk gives a short overview of the sounding rocket and small satellite projects that the Division of Space and Plasma Physics at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH is involved in. The focus of these projects is on investigation of physics of the low thermosphere/ionosphere. A series of student experiments within the REXUS (Rocket EXperiments for University Students) were carried out in the last decade, involving ejectable free-falling payloads. Some of the technical solutions developed in the REXUS projects were later used in research projects. SPIDER and SPIDER-2 rockets were launched with multiple free fallig unites to study the electrodynamics of the auroral E region, and SYSTER sounding rocket experiment is in preparation for launch in early 2026. Swedish small satellite program has been restarted a few years ago, with the MATS (Mesospheric Airglow and Aerosol Tomography and Spectroscopy) satellite for atmospheric studies launched in 2022. The electronics for the MATS imagers was designed and built at KTH, an insight will be given into instrument design and first results. Finally I mention several upcoming and proposed projects.
