Open issues regarding video surveillance

The amendment of the Data Protection Law in Austria in 2010 includes for the first time explicitly video surveillance as regulatory issue. Video surveillance is a relevant factor for the subjective feeling of security of the population. However, objective impact remains unclear and under discussion. Because video surveillance inarguably intrudes into the privacy of people we still have to deal with issues like proportionality and defining theoretical and practical limits for video surveillance.

Objective of this short-term project was to give an overview on issues still raised by video surveillance with regard to privacy, despite of the new Austrian Data Protection Law. Furthermore we intended to outline recommendations for solving the identified problems.
