The aim of Privacy Enhancing Technologies is to prevent or minimise the generation and processing of personal data without reducing the functionality of the information system.
Once implemented, their effects cannot be circumvented easily. They allow the compliance with legal obligations for the protection of personal data in complex information systems without the need for exorbitant control. They enforce trust in new information technologies and therefore help to break down barriers of acceptance and of use.
The first step was to analyse the potential of PETs and compare them with applications already implemented. In a second step both specifically successful as well as failed models of PETs will be examined to identify success factors and obstacles. The results were used to derive options and recommendations for the design of PETs, creation of awareness, or regulatory reforms.
