In this summer volume the individual articles section presents a methodological discussion of creolization as a viable concept for the Latin Middle Ages and for global pre-modern perspectives. Just as al-Idrisi’s world map depicted on our cover faces south, so does our first themed section Africa 500-1000. New Perspectives for Historical and Archaeological Research. Its contributions take a long durée perspective to investigate the political, cultural and societal transformations seen in Northern Africa in the time between c. 500 and 1000 AD, using both, textual and material evidence.

A combination of text and material in the form of inscriptions stands in the centre of our second collection, which continues our strand of Global Epigraphy, this time concentrating on the Perception and Representation of the Foreign.
