The Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the Institute of Prehistory and Historical Archaeology of the University of Vienna, together with the Department of "Man and Environment" of the Leibniz-Inst. f. Gesch. u. Kultur d. östl. Mitteleuropa (GWZO), Leipzig, the MAMUZ – Schloss Asparn/Zaya and Museum Mistelbach, the Centre for Museum Collections of the University for Continuing Education Krems and the Landessammlungen Niederösterreich, Collection Area Prehistory and Historical Archaeology, the 36. International symposium "Basic Problems on Early Historical Development in the Northern Middle Danube Region" on the topic of "Early Historic Landfills: How - What - Why?".

Who does not know them, the extensive bog sacrificial finds in Scandinavia or the barbarian treasure finds recovered from the Rhine or the coin hoards, which form a heterogeneous group of finds in early history. However, there are not only deposits at springs, rivers, moors and lakes, but also at other topographically conspicuous deposition sites.

The symposium deals with the circumstances of the finds, the deposits, the causes and motives of landfills and their settlement history. The central focus of the symposium is on the Middle Danube region and the cultural landscapes associated with it from the late Latène period through late antiquity to the early Middle Ages.
