Mice don’t just squeak. They communicate using a complex vocal language that is largely inaudible to humans. Many of their calls fall within the ultrasonic range – for example, when they are looking for a mate or when mothers communicate with their young. For researchers, these tiny signals are particularly revealing: they can provide clues about the animals’ identity, behavior, and social interactions.
