With the move into the Postsparkasse (PSK) building at the end of 2023, we have taken an important step: a total of 12 laboratory rooms now provide us with space for innovative research and a wide variety of applications.

Facilities

The facilities consists of the human lab, the animal lab, equipment room, and the lab kitchen.

The human lab consists of the following rooms:

  • Green and Blue: Two small sound booths (IAC-1202A) can be used for audio recording as well as for phonetic, psycholinguistic, and psychoacoustic testing performed with headphones. Each of the booths is controlled from outside by a computer. Two bidirectional audio channels with sampling rates up to 192 kHz are available. Booth booths can also be equipped with an ultrasound system for tongue imaging (Micro Speech Research Ultrasound System, Articulate Instruments Ltd) and with our eyetracking system (Eyelink 1000 plus, SR Research) with a sampling rate of up to 2000 Hz.
  • Brown: Acoustically treated room for recording EEG signals with our 128-channel EEG system (actiCHamp, Brain Products). Brown can also be equipped with our eyetracking system.
  • Red: An acoustically treated multi-purpose room, part of which can be visually separated by a curtain. The room is per default equipped for testing CI listeners with two computers controlling the experimental procedure for bilateral direct-electric stimulation.
  • Orange: An acoustically treated multi-purpose room, part of which can be visually separated by a curtain. The room is per default equipped for testing CI listeners with two computers controlling the experimental procedure for bilateral direct-electric stimulation.
  • Yellow: A semi-anechoic room (size of 6 x 6 x 3.5 m³) that can be used for acoustic tests and measurements in semi-anechoic conditions. Equipped with 24 bidirectional audio channels, virtual environments generated by a head mounted displays, and audio and video surveillance are available for projects like HRTF measurement, localization tests, or acoustic holography.
  • Purple: A semi-anechoic loudspeaker array studio with 91 loudspeakers and 2 subwoofers on a size of 4 x 4 m², equipped for HRTF measurements and virtual acoustics. The system can be controlled from outside in the control room and is equipped with a 192-channels audio setup, 96-channel amplifiers, headphones, VR setup, and a computer.

The animal lab has a separate access via a separate hallway and includes:

  • Black: Home for a collony of animals. The room is acoustically treated and equipped with automatic daylight system. The room can be accessed from the hallway and Gray.
  • Gray: Acoustically treated room for testing animals, with a direct access from Black and White, and a separated access from the hallway.
  • White: Home for a second separate collony of animals. The room is acoustically treated and equipped with automatic daylight system. The room can be accessed from Gray and from outside the institute.

Specialized equipment is stored in the equipment room (separate access needed). During the breaks in experiments, our subjects can use an internet terminal, relax on a couch in the lounge, or have a coffee in our lab kitchen...
