Short-Term Statistical Learning Mitigates the Ill-Posed Problem of Sound Localization

In a recent study published in Trends in Hearing, ARI researchers Robert Baumgartner and Piotr Majdak, together with Roberto Barumerli and Bram Brands, investigate how short-term statistical learning helps listeners localize sound sources more accurately.

Your outer ears subtly change the mix of frequencies in a sound depending on where it comes from (front, back, above, or below). But different sound sources also have their own frequency pattern, which can obscure those location cues. We found that within minutes, listeners' brains automatically learn a sound’s typical frequency pattern and use that to locate it more accurately—reducing big mistakes like confusing sounds in front with sounds behind. This shows hearing adapts quickly based on recent listening experience.
