The research group is a central hub for population studies on Austria, with a particular focus on subnational dynamics and Austria in a broader European context. Using both micro- and macro-level perspectives, the group investigates the structure, development, and key determinants of the country’s population. Core research areas include fertility, family dynamics, health, and refugee populations, with much of the work adopting a life-course approach. The group is involved in the international research infrastructure “Generations & Gender Programme (GGP)”, part of the national GGP consortium (GGP.AT) and at the forefront of applying Austrian register data for demographic analyses. It also actively communicates research findings to the wider public, provides evidence-based insights to stakeholders, and contributes to the formulation of population-related policies.
