Only a couple of weeks ago, the volume Kleine Welten. Ländliche Gesellschaften im Karolingerreich, ed. Thomas Kohl/Steffen Patzold/Bernhard Zeller (Vorträge und Forschungen 87, Sigmaringen 2019) was published. It goes back to a Reichenau conference in 2015. However, its contributions also reflect discussions that were conducted in the context of Walter Pohl’s ERC-Advanced Grant “Social Cohesion, Identity and Religion in Europe, 400-1200”, in the subproject “Small Worlds and Wide Horizons: Local Identities and Their Context”. The contributions present a new view on rural societies in the Carolingian Empire. They study the cooperation of individuals in spaces that were smaller than counties or dioceses. How were these “small worlds” tied into the politics of the realm? How were the rulers’ or elites’ objectives conveyed on the local level? And how were local concerns transported to the court? This book illuminates the sources that allow us to study local societies (archaeology, formulae, charters, hagiography, polyptyques). The second part of the book deals with mediators between the court, the regional elites and the local level, such as priests and office holders. The third section of the book contains regional studies on Bavaria, the middle Rhine, Alamannia, Tuscany and – beyond the Carolingian world – Brittany and northern Iberia.
