On 15 February 2024, the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna opened a special presentation entitled »Uncovered! The Professor and the Art Market« opened on 15 February 2024. The focus is on five antique objects that were purchased for the Vienna Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities in 1875 from the estate of university professor Athanasios Rousopoulos (1823-1898) in Athens. The objects were acquired after Otto Benndorf, then a professor in Prague and later a full professor in Vienna, had seen them in Rousopoulos' collection and had described them. The special presentation is dedicated to the importance of Rousopoulos as a scholar, collector and art dealer.
The exhibition is curated by Angelika Hudler, researcher in Modern Greek Studies at the OeAI, who prepared the presentation as part of the research project »Modern Greek Antiquity: an object network between the archaeologists Athanasios Rousopoulos and the KHM Vienna«. This is an OeAI project (Heritage Science) under the direction of Maria Stassinopoulou, which is funded by the City of Vienna, Municipal Department 7 – Cultural Affairs.
