»Vom Bouleuterion zum Odeion – Griechische Rederäume im historischen Wandel«

Lecture | Vienna

»Vom Bouleuterion zum Odeion – Griechische Rederäume im historischen Wandel. Überlegungen und Perspektiven zum Forschungsfeld der Historischen Oratorik am Beispiel eines aktuellen DFG-Projekts«

Prof. Dr. Peter Scholz | Stuttgart University

Since 2011, the Stuttgart Institute of History, in conjunction with the departments of acoustics, architectural history, visualization, and rhetoric, has been researching »Speaking without a microphone« in various historical periods and cultures. Based on that work, the ancient historians had further developed the concept into »Historical Oratory«. With this conception, beyond the traditional history of rhetoric, the perspective is to be focused more on the situational, i.e. on the occasion- and location-bound context. It goes far beyond the question of the rhetorical-persuasive function and focuses primarily on the acoustic dimension of public oratorical situations in their respective structural context, but also takes into account the pragmatic, ceremonial, ritual as well as performative aspects.

The lecture will outline the research field, the aims and the program of the current DFG project (»Orator, space, and auditorium in ancient Greece. Oratorical practice and political decision-making in their architectural and acoustic context«) will be sketched and finally, on the example of the Bouleuterion in Athens and Patara, the digital architectural reconstruction of the buildings and the acoustic simulations based on it will be presented.
