»THE NORTHERN PELOPONNESE FROM EAST TO WEST«

Symposium | Athens

»The Northern Peloponnese from East to West: New research by young scholars«

Since prehistoric times the Northern Peloponnese has been one of the most important areas for the development of Greek culture, even though in the past, investigations mostly concentrated on large centres such as Corinth, Olympia, Sikyon, Mycenae and Argos. In recent years, research in this region has significantly increased, especially in the sites that were considered »minor«. In the light of the new data, there is a clear need for comparison between the different centres in the region to better understand their evolution from the Iron Age, when the formation of the poleis took place, to the Roman conquest, when in fact the political structure of the region started to change radically.

PhD candidates and early career scholars are involved in numerous Northern Peloponnese projects, and this conference will give them the opportunity to share their research on different topics such as urbanistic organization, funerary archaeology, pottery production etc., compare methodological approaches, talk through difficulties encountered and discuss their results both amongst themselves and with an expert audience.
