Römische Provinzen und frühgeschichtliche Grenzkulturen

Symposion | Mistelbach

The Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the Institute for Prehistory and Historical Archaeology of the University of Vienna, together with the University of Continuing Education Krems, are organising the 33rd International Symposium "Basic Problems of Early Historical Development in the Northern Middle Danube Region" on the topic of Roman Provinces and Early Historical Border Cultures in the Museum Centre MAMUZ Mistelbach.

The central focus of the symposium is the Middle Danube region, from the end of the Latène period to Late Antiquity. In antiquity, it is above all the bearer of border structures and border societies. One fixed structure here is the Roman provinces and the Roman imperial border. For the area in front of the Roman imperial border, ancient historical and archaeological research developed terms such as clientele border states, clientele kingship, border or border culture as well as border societies. Historical-archaeological circumstances such as the continuity of pre-Roman structures, the displacement of barbarian groups and the expansion of the Roman Empire to the Danube led to the formation of border cultures on both sides of the border strip, which stood in exchange or confrontation with each other.
