In recent years, »another Greece« has increasingly attracted attention in ancient studies research. The main focus is on regional differences and institutional variants. Organisations beyond and within the polis, for example federal states or subunits, are increasingly coming into view. Recent work in the area of Elis and in the surroundings of Olympia, in which the OeAI has also played a major role, now makes completely new historical insights possible, not least for epochs that were considered as Dark Ages. On this basis, the lecture presents a new reconstruction of the early history of the complex political association of Elis.
