Das Oppidum Altenburg-Rheinau als Fenster in die Pflanzenwirtschaft einer frühen Stadt

Despite the long tradition of archaeological research on Central European oppida, questions regarding plant cultivation and human-environmental influences in such early, proto-urban settlements often remain unanswered. In order to gradually close this research gap, archaeobotanical macro-remains are being examined as part of the excavations at the Altenburg-Rheinau oppidum. The oppidum was built around 120 BC on two peninsulas of the Rhine (CH, D) and is considered a late Iron Age trading metropolis. Preliminary analyses of seeds, fruits and charcoal provide new insights into the expected intensification of land use, the range of crops and the waste disposal practices of early urban dwellers.
