Reimagining Ancient Spaces: 3D and VR technology in the Study of Greek sanctuaries

Hybrid Lecture by Efrosyni Boutsikas | University of Kent

Monday 02.11.2026 06:11 pm

The paper presents the latest results from a research project that aims to develop high-fidelity reconstructions of ancient Greek sacred spaces as tools for both academic research and public engagement. By integrating architecture, detailed topography, and astronomically accurate skyscapes through 3D modelling and immersive virtual reality (VR), the project is redefining how ancient environments can be explored and understood. The paper demonstrates how these innovative technologies enable a systematic reconceptualisation of sacred landscapes while addressing the methodological challenges of creating high-precision, multi-layered reconstructions that capture both their physical form and their experiential and conceptual dimensions.
