Seminar: Machines that Learn and the Quest for the Fundamental Laws of Nature

Wolfgang Waltenberger from the ÖAW - HEPHY institute will talk about artificial intelligence applications in physics.

Right now, artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning techniques are majorly disrupting all of the natural sciences. In this talk, I wish to give a bird's-eye view of how this disruption is playing out in particle physics, with a loose focus on efforts pursued in my home institute, HEPHY. In a second part of the talk, I wish to also discuss how modern theoretical physics in turn may help elucidate machine learning, similar to how metaphors borrowed from genetics and neurosciences have informed and guided the field of artificial intelligence in the past.
