Colloquium: Optical magnetometry

Dr. Roland Lammegger, TU Graz, will give an overview of optical magnetometry, from basic principles to applications in space.

The measurement of planetary magnetic fields enables far-reaching information about the planets inner structure including their geological layers. For this purpose, a precise and long-term stable measurement of the magnetic field is required.  Optical magnetometers like e.g. the conventional optical pumping magnetometer as well as optical magnetometers based on the Hanle and the Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) effect fulfil this requirement.

The lecture will introduce these optical magnetometers and their underlying physical principles.  Additionally, specific design aspects of the CPT based Coupled Dark State Magnetometers (CDSM), which have been developed for two space missions (CSES and JUICE), are presented.  Finally, future development steps are briefly discussed.
