In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has made astonishing progress and now shapes much of our daily lives, from medicine to technology and science. Yet, despite its success, we still do not fully understand why many AI systems work as well as they do. This raises serious concerns when AI is used in important areas where mistakes can be costly or dangerous. 

The good news is that this situation is not hopeless. Simply using more data or faster computers is not enough, but new ideas from mathematics are beginning to shed light on how these systems actually work, how accurate they are, and when they might fail. By building solid mathematical foundations, researchers are slowly turning today’s powerful but mysterious AI into a technology that can be trusted, explained, and safely used. This talk will show why there is real reason for optimism about understanding, and improving AI thanks to mathematics.

Kurzbiografie:
Seit September 2025 ist Olga Mula Professorin an der Universität Wien und leitet den Bereich Computational Partial Differential Equations. Zuvor war sie von 2022 bis 2025 Associate Professor an der TU Eindhoven. Von 2015 bis 2022 arbeitete sie als Assistant Professor an der Université Paris Dauphine.
