IMBA congratulates Maria Leptin

Professor Maria Leptin, a long-term member of the IMBA Scientific Advisory Board, was appointed as the next President of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC).

Professor Maria Leptin was appointed as the next President of the European Research Council (ERC) by the European Commission. The highly respected scientist is Director of EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) since 2010 and is serving on the IMBA Scientific Advisory Board since 2012.

Prof. Leptin’s ERC Presidency, which officially starts on October 1st, 2021, coincides with a crucial turning point for the organization. In the long-term EU budget 2021-2027, the ERC is set to receive a substantial increase in funding from Horizon Europe. The funding will total €16 billion during this period, a 22% increase in funding with regards to Horizon 2020.

Since the formation of the ERC in 2007, 19 ERC Grants have been awarded to several IMBA group leaders in research areas ranging from RNA biology to brain organoid research.

“I warmly congratulate Maria Leptin on her appointment as President of the ERC and am looking forward to continuing our fruitful collaboration on the IMBA SAB and transcending it to the European level,” states IMBA Scientific Director Professor Jürgen Knoblich.
