Wie funktionierte die mittelalterliche Buchproduktion im östlichen Mittelmeerraum? Gab es überhaupt „Skriptorien“ wie im westeuropäischen Mittelalter und wie können diese identifiziert werden? Mit diesen Fragen im Blick beleuchtet die internationale Tagung „Spaces of Book Production and Scribal Activity in the Eastern Mediterranean“ die vielfältigen Räume und Netzwerke der Buchproduktion in Byzanz und im christlichen Orient von der Spätantike bis zum Mittelalter. Expert:innen aus dem In- und Ausland sowie der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften untersuchen anhand von Fallstudien die Produktion griechischer, lateinischer, syrischer, armenischer und arabischer Manuskripte. Dabei stehen die materiellen, institutionellen und kulturellen Kontexte der Skriptorien im Mittelpunkt.
