When Theodor Sickel commenced publication of his edition of the East Frankish royal charters (911–973) in 1879, it was a sensation. Overnight, the subfield of diplomatic had been revolutionized. Almost a century and a half later, it is hardly surprising that Sickel’s work requires revisiting. This lecture surveys the prospects for a new edition of the East Frankish royal charters, recently commissioned by the MGH, reflects on what this owes to the original Sickelian editions, and considers what can be added to these. Above all, it makes a case for the enduring importance of editorial work in the twenty-first century academy.
