A comprehensive European research funding programme is named after Marie Sklodowska-Curie, Nobel Prize winner in physics and chemistry. On January 20, the international travelling exhibition »Marie Curies of the Mediterranean« opens at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna celebrating the lives and achievements of female scientists and researchers from the Mediterranean region who have received the prestigious Marie Curie fellowships from the European Union and/or contributed to it through their work.
The exhibition is a collection of 29 panels offering an intimate view of each. Each panel includes a biography that spans from their childhood and motivations to their university studies and professional achievements. These diverse backgrounds reflect the richness of the Mediterranean region. Additionally, it highlights the impact of the Marie Curie fellowships on their careers and provides a glimpse into their hobbies and family life.
The exhibition was designed by the Marie Curie Alumni Association and El Caleidoscopio, partners of the MEDNIGHT consortium, and brought to Vienna by the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
As a current Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow (MSCA GF) at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna with her X-KIN project, Sabina Cveček is going to present herself in this exhibition. In the story she shares with the public, she expresses her excitement for interdisciplinary research between socio-cultural anthropology and archaeology and outline an academic journey from Ljubljana via Vienna, where she pursued her PhD, to Chicago.
Apart from benefitting from the new interdisciplinary environment at a world-class museum, Cveček also became a chair of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) North America Chapter and a member of the MCAA Austria Chapter.
Sabina Cveček: »I hope this exhibition inspires more women and persons from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in science as well as to highlight the need for good mentorship and perseverance among early career researchers in pursuing our dreams.«
