»WEALTH TRANSFERS AND WARRIOR EXCHANGES AT THE MARGINS OF THE GREEK WORLD«

Lecture, Vienna (OeAI)

»Wealth transfers and warrior exchanges at the margins of the Greek World: Lydia | Thrace | Galatia«

Aliénor Rufin-Solas | Université de Lorraine, HISCANT-MA (EA 1132) Department

The warlike relations between the Greeks and their neighbors have been mainly described in terms of conflicts. Non-Greek peoples are still depicted, in Modern literature, as barbarians, and their description still suffers from the prejudice associated with this word. Yet, warrior collaborations and exchanges at the margins of the Greek world are documented by ancient literature, epigraphy and coins. A comparative approach shed lights on
the intensity of the warlike collaborations between Greek and non-Greek aristocraties, from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, as well as on the modalities of the alliances. Special attention will be paid to Archaic Lydia and the historical context of the invention of coinage.
