The monastery of Paulos on Dra‘ Abu el-Naga (6th – 10th centuries) is the largest known monastic complex at Western Thebes, Upper Egypt. Several excavation campaigns have been conducted in the adjacent necropolis between 2005 and 2021, uncovering about 100 graves, some of which still contained intact burials, and a central square on the hilltop. The lecture addresses the preliminary results of Tina Hobel’s dissertation project at the University of Vienna on the appearance, structure and development of the site.
