The ERC project PresentDead investigates human interactions with the dead in early medieval central and eastern Europe (5th to 8th centuries CE). Utilizing archaeological and textual evidence, it examines diverse contexts of contact through (bio-)archaeological, historical, digital, and cultural-anthropological methods. In a novel approach to the archaeological records that moves from high- to low resolution evidence the PresentDead project investigates the range of practices in cemeteries and out-of-cemetery contexts. This presentation will focus on the contribution of bio-archaeology and will present ongoing research, including findings from the 7th-8th century cemetery at Achau, Lower Austria.
