»The Anglo-Egyptian Fort at Kom Ombo«

Pamela Rose | Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI)

The Anglo-Egyptian fort at Kom Ombo was built in 1886 as part of the defences of Egypt against possible attack from the recently established Mahdist state in Sudan. Excavations by the OeAI in the fort took place in 2018 and 2019 and the results will be reviewed, along with documentary evidence from British archives that provide supplementary evidence as to the use of the fort. Together they provide a unique insight into a place and period that is otherwise not considered within the scope of traditional Egyptology.
