The Summer School »Arkeoljik Alanda Mimarın Rolü - The Role of the Architect at Archaeological Sites« of Limyra Excavation will be held from August 8 to 14, 2023. In cooperation with the Limyra Excavation and supported by the Suna & İnan Kiraç Research Institute, 15 architecture students from İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi will be introduced for eight days to the range of tasks expected of architect:s at an archaeological site.

A team from the İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi led by Zeynep Kuban will introduce the students to the practical documentation of architectural finds and building complexes. First, the students will learn traditional documentation methods by means of hand measurement and drawing, and then they will become familiar with the use of modern instruments such as the total station or even the 3D laser scan. Parallel to the increase of the requirements in the methodology of the documentation, the tasks also become more complicated in the course of this summer school. Initially, the focus will be on learning how to document simpler features such as walls, but by the end of the week, students should be able to record more complicated building complexes and document them in a variety of ways.

Another focus of this training is to learnpractical architectural work on an excavation, in cooperation with the archaeologists, such as the planning of an excavation house, of depots for the proper storage of finds, and of protective devices for in situ features. In this way, students will become familiar with the fact that »architecture« on an excavation site is not limited to the architectural documentation of buildings, but also includes practical work.

Accompanying this training program, theoretical courses such as the processing of the acquired data in the various computer programs take place in the evenings. This program is supplemented by lectures on various topics by the excavation director as well as other employees of the excavation.
