Remembering the ancestors: Burial rites and ceremonies in the 3rd millenium Cyclades

Hybrid lecture by Giorgos Gavalas | Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades | Hellenic Ministry of Culture

Archaeological data from old and recent excavations on islands (Amorgos, Keros, Kouphonisia, Despotiko, south Naxos) of the Cyclades, South Aegean Sea, dated in the 3^rd
millennium, will be presented in a synthesis exploring burial practices. The subsequent reconstruction of rites and ceremonies evokes the mechanisms of how memory and ideology were cultivated that shaped island communities. These show how rare offerings such as marble figurines and vessels, with the simplicity of their forms and their high aesthetic standards, functioned as enduring symbols and repositories of communal memory of these small communities.
