Across the Archaic Greek world songs, musicians, instruments, and musical ideas and images travelled from city to city, region to region, and between Greeks and non-Greeks. This paper explores some of the evidence and methods used as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship »Musical Identities Knowledge, and Exchange in the Archaic Greek Mediterranean (700–480 BCE)«, a project that puts Greek music in a pan-Mediterranean perspective.

»Exploring the actual music: the surviving Greek scores«

Iconography and archaeological finds of musical instruments, ancient scores, and technical treatises on music theory comprise our core evidence about the actual sound of music in the Greek and Roman eras. The presentation focuses on a new –ready-to-launch– digital edition of the documents of ancient Greek music, integrating the ancient material evidence (music -papyri, -inscriptions, and -medieval manuscripts) in an interpreting digital environment, delivering our readings accompanied by explanatory graphical and auditorial representations.
