»Keltisches Münzhandwerk im 2. und 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr.«

Bernward Ziegaus

We still do not know much about the structure and organisation of ancient mints and the workflows involved in ancient coin production. While the cities and states of the Mediterranean, with their well-established political structures, were in a position to run well-regulated minting operations, Celtic coin production was different.

This lecture tries to link up finds of Celtic coining implements with the archaeological evidence. Apart from mints in Celtic oppida and unfortified settlements, there were also temporary production sites and hoards of coining implements.

Five examples from central Europe will shed light on the different production processes of coins and the topographic peculiarities of the respective sites.
