Communication between emperor and subjects in the Roman Empire is nowhere more directly accessible than in the edicts and letters of the imperial chancery preserved on stone, papyrus, or bronze. Although the number of new discoveries has significantly expanded the material basis over recent decades, the last comprehensive collection was published almost fifty years ago. The aim of the cooperative project "Communication between Rules and Subjects through Edict and Epistle" funded by the DFG, FWF, and NCN, is therefore to present an up-to-date collection, re-edition, and commentary of imperial correspondence. At the conference in Vienna, the progress achieved so far will be presented, and findings, methodologies, and concrete editorial practices will be discussed on the basis of numerous case studies.
