Euromos in Caria was a medium-sized coastal town situated between the Grion and Latmos mountains. Archaeological research has provided new insights into the topographical and historical situation, particularly for the Hellenistic period, in which numerous inscriptions play an important role. For example, there is evidence that the city was renamed Philippeis after Philip V of Macedon. Relations with the hegemonic powers between 227 and 196 BC are also elucidated by an analysis of the inscriptions, in particular three honorary decrees for persons in the service of Antigonus, Doson and Philip V. These inscriptions, together with other sources, form the basis for a new reconstruction of the historical development of Euromos, particularly with regard to the Macedonian presence, which will be discussed in the lecture.
