Classical archaeology carries a reputation of traditionalism and conservatism. Yet, we must question to what extent reality conforms to the cliché. Within the plurality of our discipline, computational approaches – including GIS, 3D modelling, computer simulations, and more – have carved out fertile niches as part of the broader community. If anything, computational archaeologists have not always succeeded in creating a visible community or affecting broader archaeological practices, from fieldwork to outreach. In this talk, Dries Daems will present examples of computational approaches in Classical archaeology and survey the field at large to gauge where we are now, and where we might be heading.
