The Egyptian provincial administration in Canaan of the Late Bronze Age left administrative texts in hieratic script, especially in the 13th century BC. The discovery of an inscribed clay sherd from Lachish by the Austrian excavations with local and Egyptian personal names, which is already dated to the late 15th or early 14th century, raises questions about the early influence of Egypt on the written culture in southern Canaan. Linked to this is the process of the development of alphabetic writing, and Lachish is currently proving to be one of the most exciting sites in the Levant.
